This example showed a very simple document and table of contents, but the same method works for large documents with lots of headings. If you have subheadings (formatted as Heading 2, Heading 3 ) etc, these will also be entered into your table of contents as subitems.

You can customize how Word creates your table of contents via the Table of Contents dialog shown earlier in this tutorial.

If you want to change the style of Heading 1 etc., select Format - Style.
